We are a nation that has the talent to someday build an Asian powerhouse, it all begins at the simplest level. In the humble fields of our local provinces to the best pitches of our top universities. Mentor the children and build Pinoy football from the grassroots.

RVCA advocate, "The Prodigy" BJ Penn delighted thousands of MMA fans yesterday at Mall of Asia during an open sparring exhibition.

The 2X UFC Champion and one of the UFC's finest athletes paid gratitude to the thousands in attendance with an awesome display in the ring and an equally more impressive "meet and greet" with the fans. BJ gave endearing words, stating that "It won't be long until there's a Filipino World Champion in the UFC" -making reference to the competitive spirit of the Filipino and the already domineering presence showcased by the legacies of Manny Pacquiao for the sport of boxing.

BJ Closed the exhibition by acknowledging the fans, "I wanna thank the fans for coming out and for the support and for loving the sport."

The UFL Cup is nearing a close this season and the underdog Pachanga FC was recently eliminated from competition by the defending champions, Global FC, with the final score of 1-0.

Congrats to the club from Global. A valiant effort from the boys who wear Pachanga, better luck next season.

Our remainder of the season commences next weekend with the semifinals and the friendly exhibition match between David Beckham and the LA Galaxy vs. the Azkals FC (Philippine National Team).

The following are a collection images used for a future editorial about the state of our Manila Skate Scene. Billabong team rider Jeff Gonzales hit the streets and I tagged along to document what he does best.

I used the K5 for the action shots and the Pentax Q was used to document behind the scenes footage so that the viewer can see how and where we are positioned for each shot.

In the queue for the local bus. Nice thing about my gear is that it is small and lightweight, which makes photojournalism on the fly a pleasure.

In skate image publishing the rider must successfully complete the trick with a proper landing. If he doesn't land correctly, the image isn't published. Hence, sequences are used to show the start to finish. Pentax K5 at 7fps, all images 1/1000 f5.6 iso200

Last find for the day... A 9 step drop located at the University of the Philippines Campus

Yes this is quite a drop with a short landing strip, but the dramatic thing about fisheye lenses is that scenes are always more dramatic and more exaggerated. Hence, the popularity of Fisheye lenses for skate and surf photography.

The Havaianas Art Exhibit –Surf & Music Festival 2011

Are you a photographer or an artist who loves to create work that evokes a feel good vibe? Gain recognition and exposure by participating in this one of a kind exhibit, at the country’s largest Surf & Music Festival.

Think of the beach, its vibe, and all the spin offs that arise from the beach/surfing lifestyle. This may be creatively represented by action imagery, lifestyle imagery, concert photography (because music and surf have always gone hand in hand), landscape, portraiture, or still life, etc.

The theme is broad, but the unifying factor is that the content must tie in with the beach lifestyle. The creative output is dependent on each artist’s individual interpretation of the board riding experience.

Criteria for selection will be based on 30% relevance to the theme, 40% Originality, 30% Technical Merit.

Mechanics:

Submit an your original photograph or 2-dimensional art representation that celebrates the surfing lifestyle.

The artist must attach the following information upon submission of the artwork:

o Full Name

o E-mail Address

o Contact Number

Submission begins on October 10, 2011 and ends on October 20, 2011.

The top 20 artworks to be displayed at the Surf and Music Festival Art Exhibit, on October 29-31, 2011 at Aliya Beach Resort, will be announced on the Aloha Boardsports Facebook page on October 24, 2011. Winners will also receive an e-mail from Aloha Boardsports.

All photographic images must be submitted to havaianas.exhibit@yahoo.com

o For 2-dimensional artworks and paintings, send a high quality image that best displays the work.

o Initial submission may be watermarked and must be scaled at 1000pixels for judging purposes.

o You will be notified if you’ve made the cut by email.

o The top 20 artworks selected must be submitted electronically by October 23, 2011 at its highest resolution, absent of any watermark, a minimum of 250 dpi, and CYMK to be printed on Metallic paper for 16” x 20” displays.

o Alternate forms other than photographs can be any form of paint material (oil/acrylic/watercolor) or Charcoal / pen/or pencil on suitable surfaces but must stay within the size range of 16” x 20”.

o 2-dimensional artworks must fit or approximate roughly within the dimensions of 16”x20” to be displayed on an easel.

All Participants whose artwork will be chosen will be given a prize package from Aloha Boardsports and Havianas. Stay tuned for further announcements about the detailed prize package.

The Exhibit is meant to celebrate the festival and the lifestyle and not meant to be a competition. However, one image will receive a grand prize to be announced soon.

Each artist retains copyright of their work but allows the event organizers: Aloha Boardsports, Travel Factor, or Havaianas the right to display the work on their company websites and social networks.

The images will be printed on 16” x 20” metallic prints with the contest theme matte and logos mounted on Sintra Board. These matted images may be physically displayed outside the exhibit post event to highlight and commemorate the Surf & Music Festival.

The Camera Evolved. From my early roots with the 84' Pentax Program Plus, onto the many cameras used for work and pleasure, the Q has arrived.

Sometimes, there are moments where you don't want to lug around a bulky SLR, but an opportunity may arise where you may need that shot. As a spot journalist, chances come on the fly, and there have been times where a point and shoot or a phone cam leave you un-equipped.

I came across Johnny Rockets in Eastwood Mall, and the American memorabilia left me nostalgic remembering late night burgers on Melrose Ave,, Hollywood California. I wanted to preserve the experience for a possible travel feature. I needed a camera that was discrete, compact, and capable of the job.

The following are available light images shot with the PENTAX Q.

I wanted to preserve the ambiance of the restaurant and its background, so I attempted to shoot the dancing waiters with a delayed shutter speed knowing it may introduce action blur. I found the result far more pleasing than any other camera in this size range.

When shooting people under available light only, the face my present with unflattering shadows. To avoid this I extended the pop up flash (which dramatically reduces Red eye, without the need for the pre flash.

Pentax Launches the Pentax Q in Manila, Philippines

Last October 5, 2011 Supereast Asia (Official Pentax Distributor for the Philippines) launched the "Q", the world's smallest interchangeable lens camera for our local market.

I was onsite as the guest speaker for the event and was very pleased to share my experiences with the new "Q" for all the media and celebrity guests in attendance.

As a photojournalist for the Travel and Surf Industry, I'm often carrying way too much gear. Far often the weight and excess of gear has stripped the enjoyment of photography. The Q offers a powerful system that can hide in your pocket, or the palm of your hand and has singlehandedly restored the "fun" in photography.

I have always been a fan a small mirror-less cameras for their compact size and non-obtrusive appearance. My experiences with the Olympus Pen have been very satisfying, but the size and weight of the micro 4/3rds camera often had me yearning for an alternative.

My prayers were answered with the Q.

From my oldest camera to my newest camera, Photography has always been about the experience. The Q adds an entirely new chapter...

I wanted to see if the Q and a selection of primes was up to the task of covering one of my travel assignments.

I am also the senior photographer for Billabong, here in the Philippines and I traveled with some of the Billabong team riders to Siargao Island for the recent Billabong Pro Junior. Here are a collection of photos shot with the Q.

I am seldom in a self portrait, or have my photo taken by others simply because the image never turns out right.

In this case, I was very pleased because I set the camera in "auto-everything" and my non-photographer friend yielded a fairly decent shot in an extremely difficult lighting condition. The ISO performance, the SR mechanism, and the low noise were all very impressive.

Images shot Jpeg because I wanted to emulate how an enthusiast would use this camera. I'm happy to say that I am more than impressed with the results. They far exceeded my expectations. Because the Q is a system and not simply a point and shoot, it proves to be extremely versatile.

Paul John Alipayo, local surfer from Cloud 9 advances to the round of 16 of the Billabong Pro Junior

Having the presence like that of an enforcer, Paul John is one of the many well respected locals from the Philippines showing that Pinoy surfers can compete against an international field. After taking out several international names and sealing his spot into the prize money level, Paul John was asked what he would do with his guaranteed minimum 600.00 USD prize? (more so, if he wins the entire event)

John Paul simply stated in a soft spoken, gentle tone... "I am happy with my performance, proud of my fellow pinoy surfers, and if I win, I would like to use the money to continue my schooling."

With so much temptation and vices where you can easily blow your hard earned prize, Paul John humbled me with his simple statement of wanting to further improve himself over any short lived pleasures.

On a small island, where the average daily salary earns barely a few hundred pesos per day, Paul John shows giant wisdom for his youth. He makes me proud to be pinoy and extremely proud that he rides under the Freesurf label and Billabong Asia.

Jeff Gonzales, Freesurf Skater for Element takes on Singapore

Keeping with Singapore's discipline, the streets are not bombarded with renegade skaters. Why?? Probably because for such a small island dubbed "the cleanest on earth", they take care of their youth by providing, with what I've experienced... "The best collection of skate parks, anywhere..."

Another reason, why after you get past the high cost of living, Singapore becomes a very attractive place to live.

Things happen swiftly in Asia, things come and go in an instance. A friend of mine gave me a heads up that some of the boys from my hometown of Huntington Beach were coming to Manila for a one day stop on their Asian Tour. Wes Geer the touring guitarist for Korn (and co-founder, guitarist of Hed PE) sent me a msg from Korea wanting to surf the Philippines on their day off. With only a narrow window and lack of swell, we put the surf trip on hold and geared up for the show.

Nicole Wuthrich locks up the cover of Mezzo Magazine Highlighting women that take Action to the Limit

Every now and then you come across a diamond in the rough. If you looked at her accomplishments, Nicole Wuthrich, Freesurfer for Alohaboardsports and Freesurf, Inc., would already seemed polished.

For this young 25 year old, who happened to finish Cum Laude at the University of the Philippines, and is an accomplished Tae Kwon Do Champion, as well as Longboard Skate Champion, her unassuming disposition catches you off guard when you realize all that this young woman can do. Did I mention that she's also a University Professor specializing in Physical Education at the University of Asia & Pacific. I'll bet none of the student body ever cut her class...

Last year, for our Aloha Christmas Sale, I invited Professor Nicole for a photo shoot at Capones Vista Resort. We shot for about 1/2 hour and it remains as one of my most enjoyable shoots ever. She was flawless, flowed effortlessly and worked with the conditions we had to endure. (lack of swell) After looking at the shots, I knew we nailed some keepers, but never really considered that I had nailed the cover.

Some people tend to really standout in the game. Billabong Asia's Luke Landrigan, one of the Philippine's brightest stars of the local surfing world makes a surf photographer's job rather easy. When asked to deliver, he can surely perform.

With the DA* 50-135 relatively the same size as the DA* 200 f2.8, I always wondered if it would fit inside my custom housing (designed solely for the 50-135). Well after 20 minutes of setting up the camera, taking a boat out to the "island" I came to one conclusion... It works. I have one more lens to add to my water arsenal.

It has been a pleasure Surfing my whole life. It has been a far greater experience being a surf journalist and spreading the gospel of surf to those who might never have the experience. Even greater so, when my words or images have the ability to coax them into one day getting into the water to try.

At present we are experiencing the surf explosion happening in the 7107 archipelago of the Philippine Islands. I wrote a brief blog entry for Aloha Boardsports describing the recent events that are taking the country by storm.

Pentax K5, DA 10-17: extreme lighting conditions, backlit silouhette, and shooting into direct sunlight. The only artifact visible is due to the air-glass barrier from the acrylic dome port to the front element of the 10-17 fisheye. One benefit of Pentax SMC is that it offers superior control over unwanted ghosting and flare.

A meeting of Pentaxian minds... The Pentax Kr / K5 Launch in the Philippines

Having been busy with editorial work and after relocating here to the 7000 island chain in the Pacific, it was time to meet the local photo community.

I had made several friends over the years while visiting, but it was time to dive head first and meet my photo peers.

The timing couldn't have been anymore perfect. With the Launch of the Kr/K5 internationally, I was invited to express my thoughts and experiences with the latest equipment.

The group was a happy bunch. With only 25 who initially signed up, the show blossomed into well over 80 people forcing the hall to "standing room only" Special Thanks to head of Marketing Ms. Apple Chua Yap and VP Robenson Ong of Camerahaus for inviting me to speak on behalf of their new cameras.

Afterwards we were treated to Starbucks Iced Lattes and fantastic Donuts... (I am a donut fiend) and got a chance to catch up with old friends and test out the latest gear.

The Pentax K5 simply ROCKS!!!!

I got word that my special order K5 arrived straight from Japan only days prior, but was bogged down at customs before clearance.

I only picked it up yesterday evening and a few hours later, I was out and about looking for complex lighting situations to really test its worth...

Everything about it speaks game changer.

1. A more dampened shutter, it's so quiet and smooth it speaks of highest Qualtiy and Finesse. K5/K7 and DA pancke limiteds can be quite a street shooter's kit.

2. The high ISO is the real deal. Finally iso 5000+ and beyond that is actually useful straight out of the camera. Never in my wildest dreams would i shoot above iso 2000, and now with new technology, I can achieve shots never before imagined. (candlelit action shots to paint a better picture of what i mean)

3. More accurate AF, a bit more swift with less hunting. (I welcome the ability to set priority on Speed vs. AF -those who shoot a lot of tracking subjects will appreciate this)

4. I didn't have time to update the firmware, but the burst rate worked fine for me. The FW update that increases the raw burst to 20 will be a helpful, although not necessary for my style of shooting (I don't spray and pray)

5. The LCD text fonts are a little different revealing info detail like day date and time that lines the bottom of the info screen during playback. (the reason i mentioned that was because they were more eye catching on the K5, that i had never noticed them before on the K7)

6. Thank god it is the same form factor as the K7. no need for me to make another specialized water housing.

The Cleanest High ISO I have ever seen from an APS-c Camera, and possibly any DSLR for that matter. I'll let the pictures speak for themselves...

*The Annoying roving red spotlight cast a tint to the flesh tones, but did not adversely affect the K5's ability to focus in mixed color temperatures. The AF performance is well improved and worked efficiently to ease my workflow during the evening.

Super Typhoon approaches the Philippines: The biggest swell of the season.

Christmas came a bit early for surfers on the northern island of Luzon, part of the 7,107 island archipelago known as the Philippines.

As I walked past my neighborhood Starbucks, I noticed a headline which read: "Powerful typhoon nears." Such a bold statement isn't news for surfers who have been tracking this storm all week, but headlining news for citizens of the North who aren't acutely on top of the prevailing weather pattern.

The headline began to read:

"A powerful typhoon that could intensify into the highest hurricane category is barreling toward the Philippines, international storm trackers reported yesterday."

As we brace for the storm, let's hope we are more prepared and have learned our lesson from Typhoon Ondoy (Hurricane Ketsana, Sept 2009). Lowlanders head for the hills, citizens of the north brace for the rainfall, but surfers grab your guns. Expert watermen only need apply.

I am presently in Southeast Asia working for Lonely Planet. I have sampled the various ways to commute, either Bus, Train or Jeepney but when rush hour hits, it takes several hours to go only a few kilometers. I believe I have found the perfect "traffic buster."

There is typically a strong bicycle population in places like Vietnam and China. It's better for the environment, and a daily dose of cycling affords you the minimum 30 minutes of aerobic exercise that everyone should be doing. However here in the Philippines, biking isn't the norm. With the arrival of the E-Bike, I feel that is all about to change.

Whether it be biking within your subdivision, popping over to the bakery for some hot "pan de sal" or simply running a quick errand, nothing is more fun than riding an e-bike. You'll feel better in knowing that you wont be adding any further to the Carbon footprint that is negatively affecting our green Earth.

I was inspired by Russ Roca, over at his personal website, wherein he travels and shoots via 2 wheels. It inspired me to do the same albeit more challenging here in the dodgy streets of Manila.

I recently purchased a "Slim First" electric bike from Mabuhay Electric Bicycle Makati, Philippines. I will detail here in this blog some of my experiences while commuting and working here in Asia. Follow along to see my adventures on 2 wheels...

The Bitter with the Sweet -Mac Book Pro woes...

Earlier today, I was in the office working on product shots for the Volcom 2010 Line of clothing.

I wanted to burn the stock images for our Graphic designer and like before, I noticed the Superdrive was experiencing a bit of a "hiccup". Recently, I have been getting failed burns and erratic reading of burned media. Original media, like a DVD or music CD, would play fine. It just seems that "burned" data, depending on the quality of the media, or what equipment performed the burn (PC or Mac) yielded inconsistent performance from the drive.

I had this ominous feeling that my Mac Book Pro was about to experience impending doom.

Wanting to see if other media worked, I sampled a music CD and it worked fine. However, when I attempted to play a DVD movie (a skate flick by Cliche) the DVD failed to play and the superdrive only spun and attempted to eject after a few minutes.

As it turns out the DVD may have been too thick, and it was trapped in a looping attempt to read and eject. The computer essentially was rendered useless.

I rushed over to the only nearby Apple source and inquired at the iStudio store in High Street, Fort Bonifacio.

Their onsite repair technician "Gian" was able to diagnose, dismantle, and repair my failing superdrive in a little under 10 minutes. He completed the task all while talking on the phone, handling customers as they approached the service counter, and already assisting another customer with OS issues.

He proved to be truly a master at Multi-tasking.

For the Low cost of repair (believe me when I say it was "dirt" cheap), the personal service, and the quality of the store; I highly recommend iStudio for all your Apple needs.

As this life would often prove, there must always be bitter with the sweet. The speedy rescue of my beloved mac book pro could easily be classified as the "sweet", but the bitter was not the malfunction.

Still on a "high" from the pain-free repair, I wanted to indulge on the magnificence of what can only be a Krispy Kreme Original Glazed. Thankfully, there is one located across the way from the iStudio store.

I walked in, asked for 2 off the fryer and was assured they were the freshest in the house. The donuts turned up flat, hard and clearly not the freshest in the house. That my friends is the "Bitter" that came with the "Sweet."

On the Eve of the Pentax K5 -What makes this surf photographer so happy?

As many might not have realized, I have relocated to Southeast Asia to document the Surfing boom that is taking over the region. All boardsports, whether it be surfing, skating, wakeboarding, etc have become the latest craze to hit this part of the world.

Armed with my arsenal of Pentax equipment, and because of their dedication to weather sealing, I am well prepared for the task. I also incorporate the use of customized housings designed by SPL Waterhousings in collaboration with Pentax Imaging USA. SPL is the only custom housing maker that makes specialty products for the Pentax line of SLRs.

On the eve of the Pentax K5, rumors spread like wildfire about specs and performance, but only one thing concerned me, and that would be its size. With ever advancing technology, it was only a matter of time that the K series would evolve to match performance features of cameras 4X the size and 4X the price, while still retaining the features that make Pentax, "a Pentax": Small, durable, and of the highest image performance.

I knew that the engineers would crack the 7FPS barrier and this enters the realm where working sports photographers can maximize their ability to reproduce the imagery they wish to display. I feared that this advancement might possibly change the overall dimension, perhaps due to a need in a larger motor. The gods have answered my prayer, and the evolution the new Pentax K5 is still wearing its old armor. The K5 is identical in size to the K7, essentially preserving the usability of my current water housings.

With durable weather sealing in a mag-alloy shell, compact size, and swift performance the new Pentax K5 is looking to be the action photographer's dream come true.

It also incorportes HD video with perhaps the simplest operation using the shutter release as a trigger. In designing our waterhousings, Sean Labrie at SPL gives high praise to Pentax for making use of the HD video easy and efficient. Other camera makes have incorporated an additional awkwardly placed button to begin recording. With the Pentax, video is initiated with the shutter release button, and it makes video recording much easier when using a pistol grip.

This is only a short 11 second clip, but it is quite effective in showing the ease of use while in the water.

Global warming and its disruption of normal swell patterns.

By this time, of times prior, I would be frolicking in the best that the South China Sea or Pacific Ocean had to offer. These days, our excessive carbon footprint is really setting off this thing we call "global warming." Because of our over-indulgent behavior, mother nature is showing her wrath by disrupting her usual hospitable nature of gifting the world with the waves we have grown accustomed.

As I type this message, and while in a deep withdrawal from my usual surf fix, I am thankfully packing my camera bags. A category 1 typhoon is finally heading towards the north approaching southern Japan, and ultimately hammering down on Taiwan.

I anticipate warm water barrels and powerful surf, until my future updates, I'll leave you with one of the few examples of small wave surf with big style:

The Power of PENTAX -In camera HDR

As the senior photographer for the country's largest surf distributor, I am always with camera. On my way to shoot one of our stores, I left my building and walked toward the mall. (yes, I live walking distance to one of the most beautiful malls on the island)

When I stepped out onto the footpath toward the mall's entrance, I was stunned by the view. It was the calm before the storm. The gentle warm hues that lit up the sky before a typhoon was to ravage our island.

I seldom see the sky light up the way it did during that twilight, so for me its another reason why I love to travel with a camera, because you never know when you will need it most.

During the moments prior to Photokina 2010, the photo world waits to see what Pentax Imaging has up their sleeve. The rumor mill is flurried with speculation, but before the official release of the next "K", lets stop and reflect the power already attainable in the K7 or KX.

Case in point: Pentax is one of the few SLRs available that pioneered "In-camera" HDR. The effects are subtle effective and of 2 ranges: HDR 1:subtle or HDR 2:progressive. Depending on the initial result, dictates which style I use. Other cameras had followed suit, but Pentax being Pentax was the originator of this technology.

I recently took a position with Lonely Planet and am presently cruising through Southeast Asia on an Ex-Pat's dream assignment. Follow the blog for more updates on where in the world is Mark Dimo?

I travel with my SLR's, laptop, emergency kit, granola bars, and have recently been shooting with a waterproof point and shoot.

At present I am using the Pentax Optio W80, but soon will upgrade to the W90.

(Manila, Philippines) Over 6 Days, 4 massive events, and with a gang-load of skaters, Aloha Boardsports will invade the streets of Rockwell and SM Mall of Asia from May 24-30, spreading the “Gospel of Skate”.

Get ready for an action packed week of skate exhibition, tutorials and contests. The first event, The Aloha Boardsports Mini Skate Park is a 4-day skate park sponsored by Rockwell/Powerplant mall and Jam 88.3. With a 50-peso entrance fee, all ages can skate the Fresh Park skate ramps at the parking level 3, Powerplant Mall. Safety equipment and complete skate decks will be available for purchase. The event will begin daily from 11am to 9pm, from May 24-27.

Fascinated by a new trick, and can’t seem to master it on your own? On may 28^thbring your own skateboard and learn from the best. There will be a Free for All Skate Clinic for trickboarding and longboarding. Yesterday, Saturday March 20, 2010, the Volcom & Flip professional skate team skorched the streets of Manila with a skate demo that will go down as the greatest exhibition of skating talent these islands have ever witnessed.

To well over 5000 estimated in attendance at Fort Bonifacio, High Street, skaters from all throughout the Metro Manila area were treated to an jaw dropping exhibition of international skate talent from Mark Appleyard, David Gonzales, Luan Oliveira, Willow, and Louie Lopez.

International clothing company and extreme sports leader, Volcom along with Flip Skateboards have assembled a team of world-renowned skaters to temporarily take over the scorching streets of Metro Manila for a weeklong tour. The festivities begin on March 19, 2010 with Flip Skateboard’s video premiere, “Extremely Sorry” -a skateboarding exhibition and follow with the Sari-Sari Skate Tour -the Philippine’s very first national skateboarding tour. Award winning, 2003 Thrasher Magazine Skater of The Year as well as numerous other awards, Mark Appleyard will headline the event. At 28 years of age, Mark is the veteran rider on the team. Originally from Canada but now residing in Huntington Beach, California, Appleyard is well known for his smooth style and laid back personality.

Along with Appleyard, but definitely not over shadowed by his presence is, 20 year old, David Gonzalez from Medellin, Colombia. Gonzalez’s increasing popularity in North and South America has been steadily growing, as he becomes well known for doing big tricks as well as displaying an array of technical prowess.

Luan Oliveira, a 20-year-old Brazilian transplant, has recently changed his career status from amateur to professional in February of this year. This will be Luan’s first tour since joining the pro ranks so he will definitely be taking the demo to a different level by exhibiting an arsenal of highly technical tricks.

Flip Skateboard’s 26 year-old European counterpart, known simply as “Willow”, is a Flip team rider from East Germany. Willow has been known for causing a big stir in the European skate scene and is a surefire to light up during his weeklong tour of the Philippines.

Last but not least, Louie Lopez, a 14 year old from California. The youngest on the team, Lopez is still among the amateur ranks but regardless of his status, he can still bust moves like the pros.

On Saturday March 20, 2010, Fort Bonifacio These five amazing skaters will be putting on an exciting demonstration of freestyle skating that cannot be missed - especially by skating aficionados around the Metro. As a precursor, the feats of these professionals will also be on display in their new video called, “Extremely Sorry”, the third installment in Flip Skateboard’s trilogy of skate videos; “Sorry”, “Really Sorry” and “Extremely Sorry”. On Friday the 19th, before the actual skate demo, Handle Bar and Grill on Polaris Street in Makati will be providing a laid back rock and roll feel to the first staging of Flip’s newest skateboarding film, which exhibits the flair of all the skaters that will be performing at the demo. It will be the first time that the video will be shown in the Philippines; so the organizers at Aloha ensured that debut remains a FREE event to all that can attend. Premiere-goers will be rocking the night away with Crow Jane as lead singer; Nicole Asensio shakes down the house before and after the 45-minute film. As an added bonus, there will be a raffle for skateboard decks, clothing and other skate swag throughout the night.

The Thrilla in Manila will also be kicking off the first-ever national skateboarding tour. Other companies have presented national tours in the past but what makes this tour unique is that there will be a point system that will be attached to the tour. Five national stops have been designed to incorporate different regions of the nation, though their locations have yet to be announced. After the fifth competition, all of the competitors’ points will be tallied and a national champion will be decided. An event of this nature has not occurred in the history of Pinoy skating since the sport’s induction into the country.

There will be two categories of skateboarding, a 16 Year-old and under division and an Open Men’s division. Riders will be judged on their routine in 6 different areas of the skate park, with a maximum of 10 points per area. Skaters will be put into fifteen-minute heats that have 15 members each. The top five riders with the highest score out of 60 total points will advance. After three rounds, the winners of each division will collect a monetary reward. The 16 and under champion will receive P10,000 while the victor of the Open Men’s division will get P15,000 for their winning performance. In the end, the most consistent and adept skater in each category will take home a P50,000 Grand Prize for their overall exploits throughout the year.

Poised to be the skating event of the year, this precedent making tour of the Philippines, presented by Aloha Boardsports, packs more variety than any other skate event. With an extremely charged mix of international skaters, a highly anticipated video premiere and a grass roots skating competition clandestine to make history and take local skating to new heights, this is not just an average skate tour – it’s the Thrilla in Manila.

“It always hard to ‘one up’ yourself but I think we are able to do it on the sheer talent of the guys coming as well as the Sari-Sari Skate Tour that we are going to kick off for the local skate community. D-Day Looms for Surfers in Next Week’s Billabong Cloud 9 Invitational

(Friday 16th October, 2009): D-DAY is looming for an international cast of surfers with the Billabong Cloud 9 Invitational in the Philippines less than a week away from starting.

'Cloud 9', a powerful, hollow right-hander located on Siargao Island will again be the focus of the global surfing community with entry confirmations from some of the world’s hottest surfers including pipeline master Jamie O’Brien (Hawaii), 2007 runner-up Nick Vasicek (Coolangatta, Australia), 2006 champion Ryan Hipwood (Gold Coast, Australia), New Zealand's first ever World Champion surfer Jay Quinn(Gisborne, now Gold Coast, Aus) and Hawaiian surfing royalty Makua Rothman.

An invite to compete in the 2009 competition was made all the more attractive with USD $20,000 on the table and the allure of flawless, barrelling waves.

48 surfers from Hawaii, Japan, Australia, Indonesia, South Africa and 12 local wildcards will compete in a specialised format, which culminates in man-on-man heats from the quarterfinals.

Reigning champion Edito ‘Peso’ Alcala (Philippines), who rode barrel after perfect barrel to beat 2007 title holder Wade Goodall (Caloundra, Qld, Aus) in last year’s final, will don a competition vest to defend his title.

Local ace Alcala, who learned to surf at the revered break, will again prove tough competition for his international riders after putting in plenty of practice at Cloud 9 in the past month.

“It’s been pumping for weeks,” said 20-year old Alcala.

“We’ve been experiencing plenty of typhoons that have created some great waves. Hopefully it’ll continue into next week.”

What separates the specialty event from standard competitive surfing is that invited contestants are involved in deciding what conditions they will surf in.

With only two full days required to finalize the competition and a seven-day competition window, organizers have the luxury to wait for ideal conditions in which to run the event during Cloud 9’s prime swell period.

Due to Siargao's proximity to the Philippine Deep, big swells from the Pacific Ocean roll in from the second deepest stretch of water in the world to create flawless,hollow barrelling waves.

The 2009 tournament will run from October 21-27,2009.

The tournament contest site is Siargao Island’s 'Cloud 9', a powerful, hollow right-hander that has been frequently compared to the renowned surf of Hawaii and Indonesia.

MIZU, Today for Tomorrow

Kale Gray, a pretty sick photographer and one man operation kept the crowds rehydrated.

"We are mizu, because we believe in living life today in a way that will give you the tomorrow you would like to see."

While shooting at the Hurley Pro 2009, I got a chance to meet Kale Gray, a representative for the Mizu water bottle company. What struck me most was their sincere and clever conservation concerns regarding the wasteful use of bottled water.

Mizu provided colorful stainless steel bottles for purchase which you could endlessly refill for free during your visit to the ASP tour stop down at Trestles, San Clemente, California. There were people even filling their generic bottles, all at an attempt to limit the number of littered plastic bottles that end up on beaches and landfills. It was all quite a refreshing sight, and it did have a great impact on the level of trash you typicially see after a surf event.

Kudos to the boys at MIZU, very progressive and conscious thinking!

The speed of the Pentax K7 at the 2009 Hurley Pro

One of the milestone improvements of the Pentax K7 is the Faster frame rate. For those of us who shoot action, photojournalism or even street candids, FPS rate tends to be important because the precise moment can be varied by milliseconds.

I shot these photos this morning down at the Hurley Pro 2009 Trestles, in San Clemente California. After returning home from the concrete jungle of NYC, there was nothing more I wanted to do but return to the beach and surf. Just a few days prior, Pentax Imaging was on site at the International Center of Photography in Midtown Manhattan holding a press release for the launch of the Pentax KX.

I was fortunate to be invited to the launch and showcase my Surfing Lifestyle Imagery. What I wanted to add is that my present photography is far more improved with the overall faster performance of the K7. The Entry level KX, is also pretty fast with a FPS rate of 4.7

For the first time in several years, Pentax Imaging Company USA held a press conference to break ground for their new entry level 12 mp KX. The event took place at the New York International Center of Photography. The Gallery was buzzing with amazing iconic imagery from Richard Avedon (1944-2000), packed with media representatives, distinguished guests, and a slew of Pentax equipment for demo. It was my pleasure to be on hand to showcase my imagery shot with Pentax glass and talk shop with the guests, let alone sample the tasty hors d’oeuvres.

A friend of mine, and fellow Pentaxian Diego Jose inspired me to start a new post entitled: "100 portraits in 100 days"

The basis of this project was originally inspired by www.100strangers.com.

A project wherein we attempt street photographs with 100 new people and post on a daily basis. It is aimed to spark new encounters and to learn something new about each of our subjects.

My first sample is a young girl selling cherries at the side of the road from the back of her wagon. This was shot during the Pentax West Coast Viral Tour of the K7, somewhere between Seattle to Portland off the interstate 5. The cherries were harvested earlier that morning, and when I saw how large of a bag they were offering and at such a low price, I couldn't resist. I ate them for days and recall that they were the sweetest I had ever tasted.

Fun Filter Effects with The New Pentax K7

During our recent tour I met a fellow Pentaxian, Chris Davis at the Irvine Tour stop of the K7 Viral Tour.

We were stunned at her proficiency at "in-camera" digital filter tricks. Essentially you can do all of your post processing in camera. This is especially useful if you are out in the field without a computer and images are needed on the fly.

It inspired me to attempt my own style with in-camera filter effects. Here are my shots while in San Francisco this morning:

A proud day for Hawaiians, Keanu Asing Wins the Nike 6.0 Pier Pressure

Like a silent assassin, Keanu Asing of Ewa Beach Hawaii claims the Nike 6.0 Pier pressure. With a come from behind advance during his semi-final heat, Keanu went on to a commanding win during the Finals. Fresh from his Quiksilver ISA world championship title win this last April in Ecuador, Keanu is doing more than his fair share to bring world championship titles back home to Hawaii.

One of the benefits of living in a surf town is that the access to the event and athletes are a mere walking distance. With the surf barely hanging in at a mere 1-2’, with barely a 3’ set wave, I chose to watch the event from the comfort of my laptop while lounging at home.

As the quarters and semis approached, I noticed that Keanu was silently taking charge. Having lower wave counts but garnering higher scores by maximizing with powerful turns and consistent “to the beach’ surfing.

As the finals wrapped and Keanu named champion, I grabbed my camera and hopped on my bike for a quick ride to the beach. I said to myself… “This kid may one day bring the ASP world title back to Hawaii, I’d better document his path every step of the way…”

HUNTINGTON BEACH, California (Monday, June 29, 2009) – Keanu Asing (Ewa Beach, HI), 16, won the Association of Surfing Professionals (ASP) Grade-4 Nike 6.0 Pier Pressure presented by Jack’s Surfboards at South Huntington Beach Pier this afternoon over fellow finalists Dillon Perillo (Malibu, CA), 19, Evan Thompson (Jacksonville Beach, FL), 17, and Chase Wilson (Newport Beach, CA), 18.

The Nike 6.0 Pier Pressure is the only ASP Grade-4 event on the 2009 calendar, making the premier contest an integral stop in all surfers’ campaigns in their quest for qualification for the ASP World Junior Championships. All regional surfers are out to compile their top four results this year in hopes to finish within the top three on the ASP North America Pro Junior Series to earn their shot at an ASP World Junior Title.

Asing battled through the tough conditions on offer at South Huntington Beach Pier this afternoon, blasting strong outside turns on the set-waves and managed to work his way through the infamous reform, finishing each wave with strong maneuvers.

“There weren’t too many waves, but I just tried to wait my turn and get the best waves I could,” Asing said. “Luckily it worked out.”

Asing, who was a finalist at the ASP Grade-3 Arnette Pro Junior last month, earned his first ASP Pro Junior victory of the year, cementing him as the top Hawaiian in the regional ratings.

“I’m really happy with my results this year,” Asing said. “I’m getting on a roll this year and I just want to keep it going.”

Asing’s victory was almost cut short. The talented regular-footer earned his Final berth with a last-minute effort to advance out of his Semifinals heat, which proved to be crucial in his Nike 6.0 Pier Pressure victory.

“I’m so excited,” Asing said. “I never thought I’d make the Final, but I just kept chipping away and did what I had to make the Final. I was a little bit frustrated, there were no waves, and I knew there had to be one wave. Everyone had low scores and I knew I could get what I needed to advance. I just did what I had to do to make that heat.”

Perillo overtook the lead early in the Final with two massive fins-free forehand turns on a Pier bowl right which earned him a seven-point-score, but was unable to find a backup wave to overtake Asing for the win and finished runner up at the premier event.

“You had to make sure to get the set-waves and be in the right spot,” Perillo said. “If you’re too far to the left of the bowl, behind the bubble, you can’t get the waves,” Perillo said. “I was in position for the set waves, but I just didn’t get in to them, it’s my fault.”

The impressive result by the stylish regular-footer marks his third Final appearance of the 2009 ASP North America Pro Junior Series season. After missing the Arnette Pro Junior due to unfortunate circumstances, Perillo has now been a finalist in every event he’s entered this year.

“This result will help me because I finished above everyone that was ahead of me on the ratings,” Perillo said. “It’s good to have made the Final in each event so far. I’m hoping I can do well again at the U.S. Open.”

Thompson was a top performer throughout the event’s entirety, but was unable to find a rhythm in the Final, finishing third overall and the Floridian talent was thrilled to capitalize on the heightened points available at the Nike 6.0 Pier Pressure.

“I’m super stoked to have made the Final in a Grade-4,” Thompson said. “It’s hands down the biggest event of the whole year and to make this Final, you’re guaranteed to walk away with so many points. To make the Final in this event, it’s really hard, there are so many good guys and I never thought I would have made it.”

The explosive east-coaster utilized his familiarity of the small mushy conditions on offer in Huntington reminiscent of his home in Florida to earn the crucial result while topping standout performers such as defending ASP North America Pro Junior Series Champion Cory Arrambide (Ventura, CA), 20, on the way to his crucial result.

“These conditions remind me of home,” Thompson said. “It’s small and mushy and it’s really a dogfight for waves out there. There are not many waves and everyone is scratching for them when they come. I guess I’m pretty used to it, the small waves and the bumpiness, but it’s hard for everyone. No matter how good you are it’s really hard.”

Wilson also turned heads on the way to his fourth place finish. The Newport Beach local earned his first ASP Pro Junior Final at the Nike 6.0 Pier Pressure, significantly helping his cause on the ASP North America Pro Junior Series after a Semifinals finish at the ASP Grade-3 Arnette Pro Junior last month.

“This is my first Pro Junior Final ever and it’s a Grade-4, so I’m so stoked,” Wilson said. “I made the Semifinals in Newport and now I’m in the Final so this is really going to help my rating. Hopefully I’m up there now.”

I got a chance to shoot the Billabong Malaysia Team Riders in the Mentawai Islands. Good waves, Good times, and Great food!

The beauty of the K7 is it's speed. I was able to reel off 6 frames in a little over 1 sec to yield the precise frame that i wanted to display the peak moment.

The Mentawai Islands are deep Malaria Country. Thanks to Surf-Aid and their instruction of proper prophylaxis, the incidence of Disease has been well managed among the local population. Here the boys are using mosquito nets to deter the wicked Anopheles.

Initial Impressions of the Pentax K7

It's the eve of my biggest photo/surf trip. I'm uncertain if the insomnia is from the worldwide press release of the new Pentax K7, or the excitement of the upcoming trip.

Well it seems many “in the know”, or related to those in the know have taken the liberty to break embargo earlier than usual. Globally, as the official announce time neared, many sources started to leak info like that of a flood. I chose to break news at the official time. Discussion forums were buzzing, and servers were getting jammed up, and you could sense a New Era for Pentax.

By now, there are many sources (like DPR), which show size comparisons, detailed angles, and discuss specifications. So to avoid being redundant, I will make a few comments about my initial impressions, provide only web scaled small images, and highlight what I enjoy most about the new “K.” The info you find here is “official” and over the next few days, I will blog about how I intend to utilize this camera as I float through Los Angeles, Singapore, Japan, Sumatra, on into my final destination of Kandui and the Mentawai Islands.

Simplified setup for travel editorial assignments: Pentax K7, DA 15, DA* 60-250, DA 35, DA 70, Joby SLR Zoom Gorillapod, Tamrac Express 7 messenger bag, Tamrac N25 shoulder strap

I usually travel with 2 setups, one for water use and the other for land based shooting. This usually amounts to about 40 pounds of excess gear and a sore back. On this trip I will streamline the equipment to complete a travel assignment while in Singapore and using only water-based equipment for the Surfing end of the trip. I intend to use mostly the DA* lenses for their weather sealed designs which are a great utility whole shooting from the channel in a boat. In lieu of a traditional tripod and to save on weight, I will use Joby Gorillapods.

What I really enjoy:

1. The shutter is well dampened, nearly silent, and solid in its operation

2. 5.2 FPS (40 JPG Continuous Hi /15 Raw PEF, 14 RAW DNG)

3. Viewfinder with 100% field of view

4. Improved low light AF performance and AF algorithms

5. “Green” almost subdued focus assist lamp (it operates quick and efficiently and more subtle than a bright white light)

6. AF tracking in AF-C is vastly improved

7. The AF point selector toggles faster than on K10/K20

8. The mode dial locks in place with a centrally located release button

9. When in portrait mode, the rear LCD will orient itself in the portrait view as well. (No more tilting of head to read info.)

10. The dust removal system is now “hypersonic”, no longer a vibration, but a high frequency shake that is almost inaudible.

11. 3” TFT IPS LCD (it’s the same LCD technology used in the best color proofing monitors) improved clarity, anti-glare, and with 921,000 dot resolution

12. Longer battery life 900+ shots per charge

13. Magnesium alloy shell over stainless steel chassis (can operate at temps 14 – 104 degrees F)

14. 77 Multi Segment metering

15. EV comp is +/- 5

16. HD video recording at 720p (1280x720 resolution with 16:9 aspect ratio) at 30 FPS

A Day at Disneyland with an Arsenal of Pentax Glass

Since the waves have been flat, I took my family to "the Happiest Place on Earth" and shot casual family photos with a variety of lenses...

Rather than shooting brick-walls, or focus charts, I simply put the gear through its paces and if it suits my needs I am happy, if not I either synergize, adapt, or move on.

These are just random samples of the kind of shots that are usable for me in order to preserve the important events that happen in our lives. The one thing that makes Pentax a pleasure to use is the smaller size and compact nature of the equipment. I can see myself in the future taking along simply a K-? with an all new Weather Resistant Kit lens to suit all my shooting needs on a typical fun filled family day, especially for all the Water rides!!
